      Hi Emma.
At 3 weeks post op you should be on a soft , sloppy diet now. ( unless your bariatric provider has different guidelines – the Hospital Group and One Health day from 2 weeks post op it’s a soft diet for 2 weeks)
There’s no need for blender/ purée food at this stage. Basically if you can mash the meal up with the back of a fork it’s fine ( if you need a knife then don’t have it )
Portion sizes is tricky at this stage – we recc using a 6 inch plate – half soft veg where possible. But hunger is normal at this stage so healthy snacks between meals can help with this – yoghurts , bananas etc
If you have a read in The Kitchen – soft phase info has meal plans and soft phase recipes there’s lots more info there
Also read our START here section where the first 6 weeks with a band is all mapped out good luck – let us know how you get on xx

      Hi Emma

The daily calorie intake can totally vary from person to person.  With the gastric band, the emphasis is to try and come away from calorie counting and go more to portion control.  Post op hunger can be a difficult one to gauge as the swelling starts to settle and the hunger kicks back in as everyone is different.  So start on your 6″ plate and if this is not satisfying you it may be wise to increase your portion slightly to accommodate the hunger, this may stop the need for additional snacking too.

If you are looking at calories and bearing in mind that the softer diet which you are on tends to be more calorific with the additional sauces etc.  the Guidelines indicate that women need around 2,000 cals and men 2,500 to maintain a healthy body weight.  If you are looking to lose weight then a reduction of calories would be recommended, again this is hard to pin point exactly the exact amount with so many other contributing factors that need to taken into account.

Don’t forget the early days are for healing not necessarily weight loss.  Allowing the band to settle and for you to heal fully is so important.  So do make sure your hitting a good level of nutrition and taking your chewable multivitamin and mineral too xx

      ONE more questions sorry again

Sunday I move on from mush to textured foods

not i I get we have the soft food and we chew them 20 time so it’s mush now the with texture food we do the same but how does it make any diffrents when we are still chewing it to mush I don’t understand sorry if it sounds silly I just don’t understand

like now I eat eggs I chew 20 times and it’s like water meaning it’s not filling me at all before the band I could eat eggs and be full now I can eat the same amount but not feel full from it :/ confused I thought I would eat less what’s causing this I’ve eat eggs for 6 months and always full of the scrabble eggs now I feel I’m chewing to much and not getting the full feeling does this make sense I don’t understand it my self but it’s true ! X

      Hey Emma good question

The more you chew, helps increase the peristalsis function.  This is the muscles that squeeze and push the food down the digestive tract and through your band.  So even softer diet if not chewed well can cause discomfort if the muscles aren’t working optimally as the food will just slide slowly down and may even sit on top of your band for a while, giving you some pain and discomfort or even regurgitation.  So as you can expect as the hole to the stomach starts to reduce in size you will want and need the muscles working to the best they can to help avoid any of these symptoms occurring.

So for all it feels like a pretty fruitless task at present, it is so so important to start the process of change now.

The chewing and texture will stimulate the nerves too at the top of the stomach, so this will help with the hunger in the long run too.   Complex hey..!!!

Hope this helps and hasn’t completely blown your mind haha xx

Also Emma with some of the textured food like steak for example even after you have chewed 20 times that doesn’t turn to mush – it’s still quite solid – hence the difference between the soft and textured foods

Hey there thank you for the information

I’m still not understand the fact of why we need to add more textured food because if we are chewing it the same anyway what does it matter about chAnging from soft to more texture food this is where I’m getting confused as I know we have to chew chew chew

Hi Emma sometimes seeing a little visual will help get your head around what is happening inside as the band tightens, plus you have the stomach wall to take into consideration too so the hole will be smaller than this.  This image is a band with 2ml / 4ml / 6ml / 8ml in.   I think as the journey gets going this will all become more clearer.   The chewing, the textures, the hunger etc, the effects or eating soft diet as apposed to textured.  Just follow the guidance of your provider and it will all make sense in the end.   The crazy world of the gastric band haha xx

Hi Emma. It comes down to the amount of times the oesophagus has to squeeze the food through the band. A soft sloppy meal like shepherds pie slips down the band easily so less squeezes by the oesophagus are needed and therefore less messages sent to your brain to say you are full. A steak salad for example takes way more squeezes so more messages sent to your brain so you feel less hungry xx

Hi Emma that all sounds fine – it might be an idea to choose crackers before the pitta and font add any stringy veg like celery just yet. If you have a read of our problem foods article on the site or read the section called caution foods in your gastric band booklet – week 5 onwards. That will give you a bit more info. It explains what order to try the foods in – sandwich ham before chicken and pasta before rice etc. It’s not set in stone but it’s a good guide
Don’t forget to follow the 20 + rule properly xx

Don’t worry I’m sure your nurse/dietitian will access you accordingly and they will advise if you need a fill or not.  If your showing any anxiety around textures or having symptoms like you say, then you need support and eduction for now more than a fill that would be my advice.  Be honest at your assessment and hopefully they will put your mind at ease and provide the support you need or contact your surgeon if they have any other concerns.

Do you have an assessment in place to speak with your nurse or dietitian soon..?? xx

Hi, I’m struggling with portion sizes. I had my band in June and struggled all the time. Had 3ml and 2 weeks ago had .5ml out as had slime most of the time.

feel like I can’t eat normally. I’d put in 2lb pre defil now put on more

      i

following what they said to eat and ended up sabotaging myself as so down

i get hungry not sure on my portion sizes. Told portions are too big.

one dinner had 1piece of fish from a pack of 2 fillet pieces of haddock plus 5 sprouts and 2dsp if carrot and Swede mash. Felt ok but not full.

        Hi Amanda

when you have a defill because you are struggling, you have to take into consideration the swelling around the band/stomach.  This increases and adds to the level of control from your band.  When you have fluid out and the pressure released – likely you will be advised by your nurse/dietitan to return to fluids/soft diet prior to returning to textures.  This is to allow the stomach swelling to settle.  As it does you can find the release will bring a level of rebound hunger and you might feel that you go from one extreme to another – struggling to eat then can everything and portions/hunger/weight increasing.  This can be quite normal after a defill.  Try not to beat yourself up at this point.  The important thing should be that all those symptoms why you had the defill have stopped.

Once everything is settled, and you are back eating textures well with no symptoms – pain/slimy’s/regurg/reflux etc then hopefully you can get some fluid back in if your nurse or dietitian are happy with the assessment.  This will help with portions/hunger as required.

Good for you for keeping your meals nice and healthy.  Portions can vary if your band is not optimally adjusted so this can sway portions so they are hard to advise.  The best guidance we can give is try and stick to the 6″ plate – half being veg/salad – 1/4 carbs 1/4 protein – if this portion is not giving you satisfaction for 4-5 hours then you can either add a healthy snack between or increase your portion of healthy food to accommodate your hunger accordingly prior to you getting more fluid in.

Looking at your fish and veg meal, carbs are often frowned upon and ofter missed out in a bid to lose weight.  But to help with hunger and giving you a more balanced meal we encourage that you try and stick to adding some healthy carbs into your meal too. 1/4 plate.

You should be looking for a feeling of satisfied, rather than a feeling of fullness like you may of felt prior to getting your band.  Education is so important to help you understand and process how the band works thats for sure.

Hope this helps and let us know how your getting on – you are still early on in your band journey, the first 12 months is mainly seen as the adjustment/learning phase.  Can be so frustrating but keep positive and keep working at your 20+ rule – so important xx

Yes this morning I was so upset as the reason for my band is because I have PCOS and no matter how much I wanted to lose weight I couldn’t my diet was good

I never smacked I never ate crisps chocolates etc or crap foods

once in a blue moon I would have a treat may be a dessert of some sort (waffle or a milkshake )

      my daily eating was

      breakfast eggs

i eat them now they don’t fill me up where they did before

      lunch i I would have a salad

I feel like I can not have a salad now as I’m scared of getting something stuck

tea I would have a stirfry lots of veggies and hand full of rice or egg noodles every night one night it would be salmon with it the next beef the next prawns and so on I was a good eater

and now I find my self filling up on hot drinks and not eating and picking a bits of cheeses and crab sticks

for two days since I got something stuck with was a prawn I didn’t eat

Yesterday I decide to have two crackers with cheese spreed that’s all I had for the whole day and today all I’ve had is one cracker with cheese spread protein shake and that’s it

i wouldn’t say I’m staving but I’m panicking as I had it all set in my head of what I was eating and just having a smaller portion and now I’m terrified and not afraid to say it when I spoke to one health today all

they said is use BandBoozled that’s what it’s there for now this is quite annoying when I’m scared to eat food I don’t want to go down the roads of eating high cals food when I didn’t do it before and carbs I didn’t do it before so why should I have to do it now I just hope it’s not always going to be like this where I can’t have vegetables and the strifrys I like to eat I really don’t want stuck food

when I asked the other day about having the items I mentioned I was told NO to everything I said which they chucked me

off even more and panicked me even more than I was panicking I wish I was told all this before

        Hi Emma

I can totally understand how stressed out your are about what you are going through.  It is such a learning journey and hopefully you can take reassurance that I have come across PCOS patients who have gone onto have a good weight loss with the band so please keep positive on this one.

Also when you experience a stuck episode like what you have with the prawns it is so easy to develop a degree of texture anxiety.  This can really impact the function of the band as stress can really tighten your band, so this is something that you need to try and take a step back from to let things settle.

The band is designed to help control portions and hunger, prob like what you had all set in your head,  but in the early days its about changing old eating habits, importance of cutting food up, working on the 20+ rule to learn how to eat all the foods you like in the correct manor.

Some foods can be a little problematic, sure I don’t disagree with this, but most foods should go through the band if the mechanics of eating are adjusted accordingly and the food is cooked well and not too dry or tough.

Check out Laura G – she has had her band a few years and her food pics look lovely – nice and healthy, lots of veg and variety and a great portion.

Keep posting for support – we are here to help and understand that the gastric band journey is not the easiest but hopefully it will all settle and tick into place xx

      Hi Emma

Great that you have had no further issues, and fab that your concentrating on increasing your protein.  Your diet like you say is still very much soft – and like you have figured the soft diet is not always the most healthy and is not great to get the best from your band longer term.  Before your assessment on 20th you really need to work on increasing the confidence around textures and include these into your diet so your nurse/dietitan can assess you correctly and advise the best way forward.

If the anxiety is still an issue around textured foods, honestly don’t worry this is not a problem and something can be completely normal at the start of your band journey, its about how you deal with this that is important.  Increasing the volume in your band may not be the best way forward till your feeling more confident.  This is not disappointing if this is case, promise – to fill a band that the patient isn’t ready for can just cause further issues.  Sometimes support and education can be the way forward.

Be confident, cut your food up well – work with the 20+ rule and see how you go.

      Keep us updated xx

Thank you for getting back to me

yes I don’t think it would be a good idea to have to much in the band when I’m feeling this way

I love my scrabble eggs for breakfast and eggs for lunch it’s quick and easy for me to do but I don’t feel that I should be having three eggs each time may that’s to much 🤷🏼‍♀️I’m not sure.

The last two days ive had very little and starting to worry as people have said to that if I don’t eat enough food I won’t lose no weight is this true its been my period and I think the band is making me feel like I don’t need to eat I’m just drinking hot drinks if I’m honest and don’t feel like I need food no sure why :/

also its it’s my birthday next Friday and friend are asking me to go out this evening for a little drink do you think this is good idea 🙈

      Hi Emma

Maybe try 2 scrambled eggs and a slice of wholewheat toast or a cracker or 2 instead to help texture things up.

Bands normally tighten around monthly’s – so this is probably why you are feeling the lack of appetite.  You do still need to hit nutritional requirement with fluids or soft if textures become a problem.

Its your birthday it would be a shame to stay in…  just take things easy and maybe steer clear of the shots..!! haha xx

      Hey there

im dying to try toast I love scrambled egg and toast

how should I eat that chew 20 times and 20 piece size ?

I brought my self a gastric band portion control knife and spoon and fork and since having that I feel more confident as I felt like I was having to little or to much on the fork

really want to try the toast but scared of getting it stuck I would hate for that to happen.

When you say stick to the nutrition what is that I should be sticking to ?

So as long as im having the nutritions that you recommend I’m only to have the cals I’m having ? Just people all over Facebook group saying you have to have 1200 I’ll struggle to have 400 cals of food a day I prob have more than that with my skinny mochas and cappuccinos but for food it’s about 400cals in take.

      Hi Emma

just remind me how many weeks post op you are now ?

By nutrition we mean healthy foods that contain the goodness that your body needs – foods from these food groups listed on the plate below. So not the snack foods like choc, crisps, biscuits etc

we don’t recommend you count calories because having your band is your tool for weight loss now not having to count calories too. We recc 3 small, healthy, balanced meals daily which will definitely provide you with more than 400 calories – that’s way too low and won’t be giving your body all the goodness / nutrition it needs.  Your calorie intake should never really drop below a thousand as an absolute minimum.  Xx

      Amazing thank you

I’m having around 3/4 skinny hot drinks a day prob about 350 cals

      I have my water

portien shake most days but they make me bloated

I have eggs three times a day as I’ve been comftable having them for breakfast dinner and tea as I’ve not had to worry about getting anything stuck.

Thats what I’ve been doing daily defo under 1000 cals some days only about 600 cals On the days I’m  having less hot drinks but I find having the eggs fill me up all day some days I’ve only been having lunch and tea (my scrabbled eggs ) as I’ve not been starving but I’ve never been a big eater in the passed it was all to do with not being able to lose weight with my PCOS to be honest so what I am eating now isn’t bothering me.

Ive cut all carbs out  and meat as well not touched a single bit for weeks

Ill try tommorw with a slice  of toast and the eggs.  But as I say the eggs fill me up that’s why it’s not bothering me I admit I’m having three eat meal time breakfast dinner and tea so 9 eggs a day 🤣🙈 but I’m still eating but eggs are very low cals not sure if what I’m doing is right or wrong but if there filling me up and I’m enjoying them and not getting no stuck episodes or worrying I’m happy with that but it’s nutritions like you say I don’t know if that’s going to give me enough of what I need ?

Im having milk in my hot drinks and portien from my eggs ?

After just reading that about the bread I would rather not try it to be honest.

What else would you suggest to have with the eggs

cutting carbs and not having the bread doesn’t bother me I was going to try it as you suggested it but I rather not having read that article.

Try a little toasted thin with the eggs – they are a good size for the band and easier to tolerate if they are toasted xx

Hopefully not – take your time, small bites, and build up your confidence slow and steady.  It’s so important to try and keep calm too as anxiety can effect the band remember xx

      Hey there

I went out my comfort zone today

I had a sausage roll as I was out all day it got stuck 😩

this evening I had spaghetti bologanes went down ok but again stuck now

feels like I’ve got something stuck in my throat on both occasions 😩is this normal starting to really regret it I’ve stuck to eggs with no problems and decide to try a little something else but NOPE the band doesn’t like it.  GUTTED back to the eggs I go

I have my fill tommorw. God help me.

Is there anything i need to follow tommorw ?

      <p style=”text-align: left;”>Hi emma,</p>
Ino youve been sticking to eggs and your drinks but heres something ive noticed with my band, when im out i can get a bit of texture anxiety as ive not told anyone about my band however Ive found that if i have something textured for my breakfast it kind of sets the band up forthe day. I know that sounds stupid but it like wakes my band up haha. And things dont seem to get stuck at all especialy if i have textured lunch by tea time im all relaxed and able to eat comfortably all day just off setring myself up for breakfast.

If im in a rush and just have a yoghirt with no granola for breakfast and i go for lunch you can guarentee i cant even eat any of my food as the muscles around my band i feel are to tight. Also if your stressed or iver thinking if to much i find i cant eat.

Try relax and if your not comfortable just start again you might have a little underlying bug and if you have pcos your hormones can have an effect on your band. Please dont worry your gona be just fine. Take it slow, try getting a baby cup and start small with some yoghurt and granola add some dried fruit. But keep chewing.

      Your doing amazing.

      Love laura xxx

Laura this is such good advice – thanks for sharing

Emma, please don’t worry about tomorrow.  My advice would be, be honest with your nurse and the problems you have been having.  I personally feel you need a little bit longer to find your feet before even thinking about putting additional fluids in your band.

If you are not confident with what your nurse says and she wants to tighten it, please raise your concerns with her.

Don’t think your missing out by not getting a fill – more fluids doesn’t always mean more weight loss

Do let us know how you get on xx

      Thank you I will

I just want to be normal I feel such a drama queen like I’m forever asking questions about eating 🙈 I feel like I’ll never eat again

      for replying

i will try what you have said there is only me my mom and my hubby who knows about My band.

Im sick of stressing over the band and thing I’m doing something wrong

I chew chew chew chew I have jaw ache by the time I’ve finished eating most the time I give up eating my eggs because I’ve got jaw ache lol 😂

i just want to feel comtable and enjoy having the band

I do not mind eating eggs all day every day doesn’t bother me in the slightest as long as I’m losing the weight but it’s my hands there so dried out and my hairs is starting to thinner as well so I know I need to had other foods but not sure what I feel like I’ve turned vegetarian as I do not eat meat I’ve not ate bread for around 8 weeks now I know there is people out there who don’t have carbs and don’t have meat but I’m worried why my skin is changing and becoming dry I’m taking my vitamins daily but not sure if I need something else from the dr may be.

Im trying to just get on with it and try and act normal but keep failing big time when it comes trying new foods and getting thing stuck GUTTED.

If if I could get away with not having carbs and meat I will live that way it’s doesn’t matter to me but I at least want some vegetables I wish I could eat a stir fry but worried to.

Definitely speak with Sarah – she may want to just keep an eye on you to make sure things settle as not being able to eat textures with an empty band is not normal – but may just be you need a little longer for things to settle after your surgery xx

No emma that is like so normal, i went off meat and bread for ages after my band and ive only told my parents and my husband to. Haha. Were the same.

Ive found that slow introductions you will start to love food again. And some of the best recipies are veggie. You will learn to appreciate the quality of the food you eat, rather than how much you eat.

Do your self a little food log take some pics and post them on here have a look at some of the recipes on this and once a week have a little go at one.

My skin went really bad when i git my band to exept i got really spotty, funny enough i was gona do a little post about wls and skin problems tomorrow.

Things will level out, its only been 7 weeks. think of it like this youve had major surgery and a tool put in your body, your body is used to its old ways you gotta give it time to retune and form new habits. With polycystic ovary syndrome to that could have effects on your whole endocine system you may have had minor issues before with skin but they have become magnified by the lack of nutrition. Try a nice fresh cold smoothie with all your fave fruits in for some vitamins. Sip slowly hehe, idd go back to mushys even just for a week get your self feeling like you again then have your textures.

      I really feel for you.

      I have been there xxx

      Hi Emma

It can take awhile to get used to the band and for everything to settle but generally if following the 20+ rule properly everything should go through the band ok. Most people have a few foods they would just rather avoid because it’s easierbuf heLthy foods like stud try’s should be ok. I would try all the foods you want  to eat , small portions, well chewed and try not to be anxious ( easier said than done I know). If there’s a point you are struggling to eat a lot of healthy textured foods then you may need a fraction out the band to help

In the meantime concentrate on proteini take – at least 50 g daily as that can help with thinning hair. Maybe try some HP yoghurts  to give it a boost xx

Thanks Laura for taking the time to reply to my message again bless ya.

The last few days I’ve been finding my feet with textured foods

ive been handling better that I thought to To be honest.  My anxiety as slowed down

Thursday I had granola and yogurt for breakfast and chicken peppers Mexican rice for my tea

Yestetday was my birthday I had

one sausage one bacons and Tomotoes for my breakfast

half a sausage roll for my dinner

      and my evening food was

Chinese’s birthday treat didn’t eat much to be honest prob half a tea plate of food

I’m eating but never know when I’m full I don’t get no sensation at all to say I’ve had enough food to say I’ve eat to much to less :/ that’s the only problem I’m suffering at the moment and I feel like I’ve got some thing constantly stuck in my throat for the passed 2 weeks I thought I had tonsillitis but I’m starting to think may be I don’t as it’s just not going down and the drs gave me antibiotics

I’m finding my feet now with the texture foods and trying some foods

      breakfast granola with yougurt

      ive also had yesterday

mine bacons one sausage and tomatoes

      for my tea I’ve tried

      Mexican rice peppers and chicken

last night I had a Chinese birthday treat only had half of a tea plate of mix items

I feel so around foods at the moment anxiety it’s ok.

But im starting to think I have a problem as I have for two weeks a feeling in the back of my throat that I thought was tonsillitis but I’m starting to think other wise as it’s just not clearing up and I’m on antibiotics :/

the other thing I don’t get a sensation that I’ve had food like a feeling

I know I’ve ate and I’m not starving but I don’t get no indication to ive eat or doesn’t even feel like I’m eating if that makes sense

so I could eat my food but don’t feel like I’ve eaten anything but I know I’m not starving or hungry but just don’t get no sensation of eating I hope this makes sense

Emma thats great you can eat better now. Idd keep g o ing the way you are and then book your fill for in 2 weeks time.  Use a small side plate so you can control your potions,

Until your at optimum level you wont feel full like some of us. So thats why you need to do some self control at the start.

      Your doing amazing.

      Happy birthday for yesterday xxx

Aw happy birthday Emna – hope u had a fab day !!

You are def getting there with your band – keep going. The textured you managed are great.

Mite can be a different sensation with the band – aiming to feel just satisfied ( not hungry) but not uncomfortably full. You will know when you reach that point – well done xxx

will I be ok to have broccoli ? This isn’t a problem food is it ?

Whay sort of cals should i be I be sticking to

I know the lady mention the other night when I went to see the nurse that I need to be having 1000 or more cals I don’t get it because I didn’t use to have that many cals before the band :/

my eggs would only be abbr 200cals for my breakfast

my salad lunch about 300 and then my evening meal about 400 cals

so I’m not sure what I should be doing regarding calories?

Im just going to do an online shop this week I plan to have

salad lunches meat and salads may be a cracker bread with it

then for my evening meal I’m thinking vegetables and chicken broccoli chicken peppers and may be get some ready meals I’ve seen some under 300 cals meals that look good I thought I could try some of them this week

I’m starving to feel starving 2 hours after my food and then I’m reaching for snacks which I didn’t really want to do but I don’t know if I’m eating enough food in the first place

      yesterday breakfast

one tin of plum Tom’s 2 skinny sausages 2 bacon after I ate it I didn’t feel like I ate anything but this happened ever since over had the band and then 2 hours later I wanted to just reach for crisps and chocolates and god knows what’s else I didn’t but I could of easy done that.

Im also I’ve the last few day got a really really dry mouth I’m not sure if it’s something I’m doing it’s only since I’ve started eating as before I was only eating the eggs now my mouth is just so dry any ideas why and what could be causing it ? X

      Hi Emma

Broccoli is fine, just remember to cut it up and chew it well.  Glad to hear you are adding extra food groups into your diet now.

We try to encourage that you come away from calorie counting with a band if you can.  Its about portions ideally.

If you’re feeling hungry after you have ate, (and your meals are small) maybe try to increase your portions at your mealtimes until your band kicks in and will help with reducing portions and hunger.

Not to sure what the dry mouth is..??  are you drinking enough – do you take your multivitamins..??

If things continue it may be worth mentioning it too your GP

Good luck with your shop, aim for the colourful foods and you can’t go wrong xx

      Thank you

I’m booking an appointment tommorw for the doctors.

I’ve been looking online and I don’t think what I thought was a stuck feeling wasn’t as the feeling I got when I thought I had stuck was in my throat not my chest area :/

so im going to see them about that and now the dry mouth something don’t add up

liquid I’m trying to get it down me but not every day I meet the amount I should have to be honest.

Does it matter if im taking longer than 20 mins to eat I’m trying to rush my food to keep up with the time limit at the moment 🙈 it’s hard work.

Do you have any day meal plans I can follow break lunch dinner ideas ? Like a weekly plan I can follow I find it easy to follow plans x

Hi Emma. A GP app would be good – put your mind at rest

I would def concentrate on more fluids – that’s probably where the dry mouth comes from.

Meal plans are all in The Kitchen.  We try not be too prescriptive with these because it’s about learning to plan and cook your own meals whilst still having the flexibility to have what you fancy to eat not what we say you should have. The mix and match textured ones would be ideal for you just now. Meal ideas but still flexible

Let us know how u get on at docs  good luck xx
