Hi All, I got bandedon the 10th july. id lost 12 lb on preop diet and only lost 10 lb since op and have had 2 fills and am 4.75ml in a 10ml band. I am struggling to eat meat unless it has a sauce with it and dont eat a great deal even though i could on times as I feel no restriction. I am having my 3rd fill on friday so might notice some differance. Im feeling really disheartened that the weight is coming off so slowly and would have expected to lose a lot more by now. I am 18 3 so have quite a bit to lose. Can I have some advice please? xx

      Hi Rebecca

      Welcome to the site.

Try not to get disheartened – you are actually doing amazingly well!! Many people actually gain weight in the early weeks after the band is placed – the liver replenishes it’s glycogen stores after the strict pre – op diet. Also the band probably won’t be optimally adjusted yet -it usually takes between 4-6 adjustments over the first 6 months to get the right amount of fluid in the band for you.

You have lost weight before and after the band surgery so keep going and try not to worry. Everything you are experiencing just now is absolutely normal at this stage.

Have a little read through the weight section in  The Library too

if you are finding your portions are still too big and you want a diet plan to follow until the band is optimally adjusted you could try the 54321 diet plan in The Diet Plans section of the site.

Once the band is well adjusted your portion sizes should be small and you should be satisfied in – between meals so a specific diet plan shouldn’t be needed then xx

      Hi,

I was due to have my 1st fill on Monday however due to a family emergency I had to cancel. I called THG & left a message & requested someone to call me back but so far haven’t received a call back to re-sechdule. I’m a little worried about the amount of time I’ll be without my band being filled. I’m eager to get my journey started. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks

      Hi,

i had my first fill today. I was also disappointed with my weight loss even though I’ve lost 20lbs. But in the last week I had gained 3 1/2 pounds which really upset me. In any case I was a bit worried about the fill but it’s been fine. Wish I could see somewhere everyone’s WL journey. Amount lost and time taken.

      Hi Kulsoom

Firstly congrats on such an impressive weight loss – even before a fill has gone into your band…!!!!

The initially weight loss after your surgery is not always sustainable once the swelling subsides and you start to reintroduce your textures.  You can feel an increase in hunger and portions so it is really not uncommon to experience a little gain.  This jus reassures us that your band is ready to start adjusting now.

Even with an optimally adjusted band the weight loss is only aimed for 1-2lbs a week – so you have exceeded this well and truly so please don’t be disappointed.

Glad your first adjustment went well, concentrate on your 20+ Rule, stick to healthy textured food and you can’t go wrong

let us know how your getting on and well  done again that is an amazin start – keep up the good work

dont forget to track your weight and measurements in the weigh in section xx

      Hi everyone!

My name is Amanda and i dont know how to join in your conversations or ask a question…please help!

Iive been doing the pre-op diet for 12 days now and i have an awful pounding headache,  ive been constipated for 10 days and now my tummy is swirling snd gurgling around. Is this normal?

      Thankyou. X

      Hi Amanda

welcome to the site. You have posted correctly to join in with the conversations 😃

aw the pre – op diet is probably the hardest part of this whole journey – very strict. Keep going though – this is what is preparing you and your body for surgery

the symptoms you mention are normal and unwelcome side effects of the pre – op diet   First of all make sure you have at least 2 litres of water. Take some meds as needed for them until you get past your surgery

what provider are you with ? So I can see what re – op fiet you are on x

aw good luck – how much longer have u got left in it ? Hopefully not long now xx

      Hi there guys.

My name is Nish and I have joined new. I have had the band for 3 years did loose 5 stone but put it back on as I had my son.

I had had started having my band fills last year. But now there just not making much difference like I know it’s there but just not working. Before when I lost the weight I could actually feel the food going through. But now that feeling only comes sometimes when I eat little faster.

Had a band fill today. Still didn’t much make difference.

Any advice. As I just want it to start to working.

      Many thanks

Hi Nish – welcome to BandBoozled

congratulations on the birth of your son and on your past weight loss  you have clearly worked hard with the band before and you will get there again with it

      sorry to hear you are struggling with your band at the moment. It actually just sounds like there might just not be enough fluid in there yet ;

      – make sure you are eating solid, textured foods

      – are you hungry between meals?

      – what are you portion sizes like ?

Just make sure you have realistic expectations of the band too – you shouldn’t be aiming to feel good going through the band – generally that can mean the band is a little on the tight side.  You should be able to eat 3 small , Reg meals daily of textured foods and feel satisfied between meals without having any red zone symptoms ( food getting stuck, discomfort on eating, reflux, night cough etc)

how much fluid have you got in your band ?

Keep us posted on your progress so we can help xx

Also the first time around the focus is FULL ON… you’ve had your surgery and on it 100%…..  I think now with a slightly different mind frame, busy mum and in a totally different place you jus my need to look at this next weight loss phase in different eyes… you can do this and will get there, just may be a little different than before.

Excited for you as you being here shows that mentally your ready to crack on and  getting your band working the best it can will help you no end

Let’s do this,  focus on small achievable goals.. small steps in the right direction. Is key.

I’m sure your last on the list of important things to do… maybe it’s time to bump yourself up the list a little 👍🏻 xx

      Hi there

thanks for the support I have 12.2 at the moment in my band.

I do get hungrier in and between meals.

It just does not feel tight enough this time around. Like last time I think I only went to 11.5 and my band was tight. I’m gonna try again from tomorrow to make a routine. I always struggle on breakfast never find something filling enough

      many thanks

Hi Nish. It just sounds like you might need a little more in the band – as long as you don’t have the red zone symptoms above and your meals are textured. You will get there with it.

Breakfast beeds to be textured to be filling – egg on toast , bagel , crunchy cereal etc

Have  a little look through our meal plans in The Kitchen for more ideas xx

Hiya, I was banded 5 weeks ago and am feeling a little flat. I am booked into have my first fill next werk, but at the moment, I feel I could probably eat as I did pre-op. But I certainly haven’t tried to, as I’m not daft and am very frightened of the outcome should I decide to do so.

I’m not weighing myself anymore for a while but I think I have lost a little weight but I am unsure of the exact weight and my scales are dodgy lol. My starting weight was 14st 10lb.  My portion sizes are small, a side plate size.

I am experiencing a “twinge” in my stomach, almost like a pulsating feeling. Right from my incision sites through to the top of my pubic bone area…I’m thinking this may be possibly wind, but I am concerned that it’s something to do with band?

      Thanks in advance

      Michelleb

Hi Michelle. Welcome to the site. It’s all new for you right now and normal to feel a bit down.  You have done an amazing thing though – taken control of your weight and found a solution to help. Hopefully soon you will feel excited for the journey ahead and we will help all we can

As the swelling starts to go down around the band site your apoetite can come back so again it’s normal to be able to manage bigger  portions and feel hungry. You are doing really well if your operations are in a side plate so that’s good –  all positive  steps to you working with the band and reaching your goal weight

The port has been stitched to the muscle on the abdonal wall so the discomfort is probably down to that. It should settle down fine but   the nurse will have a good feel around  next week at your fill to check everything is ok and put your mind at rest.

Exciting  times ahead  now – your first fill is the start of your new weight loss journey. It might take a few fills  before your band is optimally adjusted  but each one is a step in the right direction.  Good luck with it. Join us every Friday for our weigh in here and we can see your progress and help keep you going xxx

Thank you! This is really worrying.me!

      Hi Amanda

Please be reassured, once all the swelling resolves and the band is settled around the top of the stomach most people do not feel anything different, almost like they haven’t even got a band 🤔😣

The band can take a couple of fills before it starts to have an impact on the portion size and hunger.  Disappointing I know but it really does show that your healing great and ready and raring for your fill next week.

Just continue to work on your 20+ rule and keeping your meals healthy and textured that way your nurse can assess you and fill accordingly.

Let us know how you get on, sometimes expectations can be a lot different to the realisation, but keep posting and honestly you will be on your way before you know

good luck with your adjustment xx

      Hi Kerri

If your provider  allows yoghurts / surgeon  then that’s fine   Make sure normal liquids are absolutely fine first.  They should be smooth yoghurts – no lumps and bumps ( low fat custard consistency is usually fine ) dip in the spoon and only have a small amount at one time xx

Hi Jennifer, welcome on board and hope your healing well

It is encouraged that you keep up and mobile from now, within reason…. but avoid any lifting and carrying for a few weeks at least and no high impact exercise for 6 weeks.   If your doing anything that causes you pain you need to step things down.   Listen to your body, more often this will tell you if your overdoing things too soon

Well done you for wanting to get focused with your exercise

Get some nice walks in whilst your in the early stages xx

      Hi Natasha

The dreaded wind hey…!!!!   I have attached the week 1 link, on this is some hints and tips to help with wind.

Take the wind preps, keep yourself up and mobile, make sure you are not leaving longer gaps between drinking/eating

Maybe try some arm windmills too, my patients say this can help… just be careful that your not over stretching

Hope alls going well and the wind pain moves on quickly..!!!! xx

I had my band surgery on the 16th of December and i just had my 2nd fill last week, im feeling a-bit anxious at the fact im not feeling full and im still eating the same amount of volume i was eating even before the band. Ive only lost 4kg since my surgery and i have 4.5 ml in my band. Any suggestions on what to do or how to feel?

Hi Nooran, good to hear from you

It can more often take a few fills before your band can take effect, so its not uncommon to not be feeling a great level of control in the early months…. Frustrating I know, but at least you are 2 fills in now and hopefully the band is now happily primed with 4.5ml in…. so hopefully going forward you may start to see a slight decrease in portions and hunger hopefully.   Keep positive and focuses, good things are happening and again weight loss can be slow, as the early months are healing and priming of your band, no necessarily weight loss (crazy I know, but true unfortunately).  Continue on with your 20+ rule – keep your meals as healthy and textured as possible (to help with any stimulation)  and don’t give up….

Get your next fill booked in at the soonest and just keep cracking on….. There is a weight loss challenge on the purple scroll down, maybe have a look at this to give you some focus

Your still 4kg down – which is great (some people put on after surgery)  You got this 🤗xx

      Hello.
ive had my band done for 9 months now, everything has been fine other than a few times where I have been sick due to putting to much in my mouth or not chewing enough, from Saturday (4 days ago) I have not been able to keep anything down. I have occasionally managed to get water/juice down sometimes I’ve thrown that back up also. I haven’t had a band fill since the 4th February. What should I do? What could be the cause of this…

    • #18905

      Hey Molly

If everything was going ok before all the issues started 4 days ago, it could be just some temporary irritation (the band can tighten for no reason or from a trigger like, heat, hormones, stress, dehydration and many more)   The most important thing is allowing the stomach to settle, rest and let any irritation and swelling go down.   This is impossible to do if you are regurgitating.   So I would say go back to fluids only, sip slowly and small continuously throughout the day to make sure you are getting a good level of hydration.  Try sucking some ice cubes – this can help with irritation.    If these are going down ok – good sign, stay on these for 3 days then try introducing some soft diet – again slowly and steady – using the 20+ rule.    If fluids are problematic, then unfortunately you will prob need to have some fluid out :-(.   this would be a case of call your provider to arrange at the soonest.   Hopefully if fluids are ok… things should settle in time.   If you are having any other symptoms now, reflux, night coughs I would say drop your provider a call anyway to arrange a dietitian assessment.

Let us know how your getting on and good luck with everything xx

      Hi,

my name is Glenys and I’ve just joined up.
I had a gastric band about 9 years ago. I initially lost weight and then started being very sick. This continued for about 2 years despite trying lots of things. I then had a scan all was ok but I decided to try myself and have liquid taken out. About 4 years later, I  tried again half heartedly and gave up again

A few years on, now I have decided to get my act together with support from my family ( I tried to go it alone before) I am in a good place, mentally, exercise regularly And feel I need to give it one last go.   I have contacted the clinic but waiting to hear. Before I didn’t join any groups or anything. This group sounds just what I’m looking for.
I wondered if anyone had a similar experience.
thank you for reading. Glenys x

        HI Glenys

Good to have you on board and welcome to the site – the main chats are on the FB group which I see you have joined up now.  We look forward to supporting you on your weight loss journey

Its about getting your band working as it should and you following the guidelines again to get the best from it.  We have seen lots of patients revisit and journeys after a lull and do really well.   So keep positive, keep posting,  work with the basics 20+ rule, small plate, correct portions

So I’m guessing you contacting the clinic was for a fill maybe..??  are you having any issues with your band..??  regard/reflux etc

        exciting time ahead xx

Hi. Thank you. Yes I’m wanting to get it filled again. Although it’s empty I do get sickness and restriction sometimes. I realise there was nothing like this site when I had mine and minimal resources. Last night I read through everything in detail. It really opened my eyes. I feel confident that with this site and the group I could do 3rd time lucky.
I have even now been open with my friends to let them know and they have said they will support me. Last time I was all alone try8mgbto keep a secret in case I failed. Which I did.

You didn’t fail Glenys – this is your time to shine now…!!!  It’s out there, friends know…. it’s not a cheat or a magic wand…. but what it is is a fabulous tool, when worked correctly can really aid weight loss thru smalller portions and decrease in hunger.

Exciting that your starting a fresh – with a whole new outlook… a positive one…. you have all the help you need this end to assist you and guide you, and with your self help and determination you can do this…

no pressure, little steps – firstly I wooild say you need to revisit the 20+ rule and master that down to a tee, before any fluid goes in…. then slow steady and managed well fills Wins the race

We are thrilled to hear that you have absorbed all the knowledge on the site – now let’s get this show on the road 👍🏻

      Hi Emma

      welcome to the site

it could be that. Make sure you eat really slowly – follow the 20+ rule   Then aim to stop eating at 20 mins and throw the rest away.
If that doesn’t help I would give your provider a call to discuss further.
      keep us posted xx

        Hi Samantha

Once your wounds are smooth and scab free they can be submerged in water.   If done before this stage can lead to infection I’m afraid – so showers till then to be on the safe side we would always advise xx

      Hi

I had my first fill last Thursday – I’m recovering really well I’m already back on normal foods and can pretty much eat without any issues (so far so good! no sickness of food getting stuck)

Only thing is I feel is a bit odd at the moment. Is I’m managing to eat my normal portions.. for instance today I had a jacket potato with tuna for lunch and tonight I had a low calorie sweet and sour chicken meal from Tesco and I have eaten it all. I must say, I do feel like I am fuller for longer but I’m still eating my ‘normal’ portions.. is this normal after the first fill?

I have a small 10ml band. My nurse put 3ML in at the clinic and I couldn’t keep water down so I think she took out 1ML, so now down to 2.

      Hi Grace

try not to be too concerned about your portions at this stage.   Likely is you will need several adjustments (4-6) for the band to really start to kick in offering you the portion control and reduced hunger.   For now just work with healthy textures best you can, be adhering to the 20+ rule and drinking plenty of clear fluids.  Good things are happening can just take a little while to kick in.

Get your second fill in the dairy and keep going lovely. I’m sure you are doing a great job xx
